The
Surface is an online community that supports 'older youth', and promotes
the creation of new initiatives and ev ents in the arts, culture and
new media sectors.
There
are many arts, culture and new media festivals in Australia that cater
to youth, providing young people with opportunities to produce art work
in various formats, and encouraging them to present their talents to
a wide audience. The Surface website was officially launched on 25 November
2003.
The
festivals form partnerships with the media industry to profile creative
young people and their work across radio, TV, in print and online. These
events are about creativity, celebrating youth culture, and having fun.
However,
these festivals and the opportunities they provide are only made available
to those under twenty-five years of age. There are limited opportunities
for people over 25 to continue to participate in these types of festivals,
unless they have already established themselves in their chosen field,
or opt to take on a mentoring or coordination role.
There
has long been an interest from this age group to actively participate
in these events. The disappointment and discontent of over-25s
has been voiced over a number of forums, and finally, those voices have
been heard.
The
belief that there must be other people that feel this way inspired founder
and editor Michelle Lovi to create The Surface. It is my aspiration
that The Surface will become the foundation of a nation-wide festival;
to encourage and value the talents of those too old to be
considered youth.
