Richard Walker specialises in recording the work of artists and craftspeople.
Most of this work occurs in Richard’s studio space in Balmain.
Richard is motivated by the challenge of capturing the detail of an artist’s work. “I love the time I spend in the studio with beautiful objects. I have photographed everything from paintings to sculpture, textiles to glass art, ceramics to jewellery. And the bonus for me is I am entrusted with an artist’s best work.”
Artists use Richard’s images for web sites, brochures, press advertisements and portfolios.

Painting With Light
Richard is also an accomplished light painter. This exacting technique enables him to capture remarkable portraits of flowers. Richard explains, “I want people to look at flowers with new eyes – to see parts of a flower they have never noticed before.”
Essentially, Richard exposes individual flowers using a small handheld spotlight. In a series of time exposures, he slowly builds the final image on a single frame of film. The process requires patience and precision but the results are exciting and unique.
To produce quality enlargements, Richard photographs with a medium format camera. Prints are produced in limited editions. Richard’s floral portraits start from $160 for a limited edition 36 cm by 24 cm print.
Over the last ten years, Richard has exhibited at galleries in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. His work is displayed at the Intercontinental Hotel, Sydney and the Shangri-la Resort in Fiji. His floral portraits hang in private collections in the USA, England, Australia and New Zealand.
A New Direction
The magic of light painting has enticed Richard to step outside his studio. During the twilight hour Richard uses a powerful torch to illuminate the form and texture of trees in their surroundings. Each image is an exploration of the strength and beauty of trees.
