Sallie Portnoy
Glass Sculpture (Manly, NSW)

Sallie Portnoy is a Canadian / Australian artist based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. She studied fine arts in Canada (University of Manitoba & Nova Scotia College of Art & Design) and at COFA and Sydney College of the Arts in Sydney. She is known best for her cast glass sculpture but also works with glass mosaic, clay and more recently bronze, aluminium, steel, cement and polystyrene when the project suits.

Portnoy is well known for her bold figurative coloured sculptures as well as her private and public mosaic site-specific designs and installations.

She teaches dynamic glass workshops in her studio, and at numerous art centres nationally and internationally and has been exhibiting for over 20 years.

Much of Sallie's imagery is based in mythological nerrative and and abstract thought. The figure in her glass pieces has been used as a universal symbol of the vessel, the soul, and is a symbiosis of the human form and the artistic investigation of positive and negative space. The figures speak with light, movement and simple sensuality. They are about human emotion, empowerment and sociocultural issues. As much as Portnoy's work is narrative and a study of form, it is also very much an exploration of the play of light.

Sallie's work has been shown is several solo and group exhibitions around Australia, including Soho Gallery (Sydney), Glass Artists Gallery (Sydney), Manly Art Gallery (Sydney), and several international galleries.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards & private & public art commissions.

Says Sallie "Inspiration is a mystery to me. What I create surprises and excites me and offers a window into deep experiences of consciousness. My creative output filters through my fascination with human nature, the physical form, psychology, mysticism and the enigma of rituals."
