Sally West
Painter (Blueys Beach, NSW)

Growing up on a sheep and wheat station in Outback Australia, I dreamt of traveling the world painting as I went, escaping the isolation and embracing the ocean. I had 10000 acres to roam and I drew a lot. One day I moved to Bondi Beach. Here my dreams began edging towards reality. I immersed myself in the ocean, had my first art exhibition and created a base from which to travel the world.

I began an exciting personal journey of self awareness, reflecting on my connection with the Outback, I embarked on many years of travel through Europe, Asia, India, Nepal. These travels have become major influences for my artwork.

My first major solo exhibition, was was in 1998 at Bondi Beach Pavilion Gallery. It featured works in oil, pastel and charcoal. It was a success, kickstarting my career as an artist.

I have been exhibiting regularly ever since, mainly in Bondi (Sydney), Paddington (Sydney), Melbourne and recently in New York.

My work covers genre, subject, portrait and abstract paintings, and are my way of interpreting this world. It is essential that I paint, there’s no choice. I want to explore this passion as passionately as I can. The thrill of exploring the non-verbal, silent world of colour is my greatest addiction. Colour never ceases to surprise me. I want people to understand that it is it’s own world, it’s own universe.

I want people to enjoy the beauty, the underlying messages, the contrasts, the play, the warmth, the cold, the absence and texture of colour.

Art is our  way of reminding ourselves that there is beauty in the world, in the light, in the forms, in life. We need art like we need food. It is the magic, the light.
