Darlinghurst
Theatre Company was originally based at the Wayside Theatre in Kings
Cross. The Sydney hail storm destroyed it's roof and Darlinghurst Theatre
Company was sent in search of new home. South Sydney Council assisted
by providing a venue with affordable rent to a theatre company.
With
support from The NSW Ministry of the Arts, The Grosvenor Club and many
individuals, $500,000 worth of internal renovations was completed and
a new Sydney Theatre was born in Potts Point. At the time of the rennovations,
Her Majesty's Theatre was sadly closed. Some of Her Majesty's found
a new home at Darlinghurst Theatre Company, such as the theatre seats,
dressing room mirrors, theatre lighting, and bar equipment including
the original bar top.
Darlinghurst
Theatre co-produces plays with a wide range of independent theatre producers
and groups. We focus on new Australian works whenever possible, and
as part of that focus, present the annual "In The Raw" Festival,
which gives emerging playwrights the opportunity to mount new productions,
with six new works premiering over three weeks.
Darlinghurst Theatre Company also has a secondary
arm, Darlo Drama, which runs three distinct terms of professional acting
classes, which can be followed up with advanced activity dedicated classes
and tutorials, and gives members the opportunity to appear in Studio
Productions which are mounted at Darlinghurst Theatre four times a year.
