Inspyr first formed in July 2003, based on an idea that would link and promote local writers and musicians seeking an outlet to self-promote primarily within the arts community. Expressions of interest were sent out via flyers and mail-outs, seeking team-playing, ambitious types to help develop an artist base prepared to support each others gigs and create networking opportunities.

The first Inspyr zine and yahoo group forum was announced in October of the same year. A zine workshop formulated an avenue to platform the collective’s artists, with new writers and acoustic-based musicians encouraged to partake in the bi-annual zine releases and launch events. Traditionally, our issues include a cd of the featured band, themed writing, a featured playwright and an article on the supporting venue. The zine is circulated amongst the artists on the day and then stocked at selected outlets.

Inspyr has now grown beyond just a self-publishing idea. We’re a small community engaging in dinner gatherings, cd launches, festivals, zine fairs, local theatre productions. We’ve also trialled open mike nights and connected with other networks. Our continuation is based on member input and a willingness to cooperate and understand that there is a bigger picture.

The vision for our group is to create a sense of community amongst us, which in turn creates openings for members of the group. Inspyr is a genuine interest group. If you're ambitious, willing to participate with us approximately once a month and curious about our 'creative listening audience' concept, then this might sound good to you.
