Patio
de Tango
Patio
de Tango is dedicated to teaching and promoting 'Argentine Tango' as
a social dance in Sydney Australia. Its
activities include weekly tango classes, special workshops with visiting
teachers, and regular 'Milongas' (tango social dances).
Patio
de Tango was formed and is run by Pedro Alvarez and his wife Sophia
Alvarez. Pedro hails from Buenos Aires and Sophia from New Zealand.
Pedro's
life has been greatly influenced and enriched by music, dance and movement;
his father, Florentino, was a teacher of Argentine folk dance. From
the age of 14 Pedro worked as a waiter in tango bars, and it was there
that he grew to love the music and dance of the Argentine Tango. In
addition to dancing Tango, he has drummed for a rock 'n roll band and
marched for a army band during miliatary service. He also attained a
black belt in the martial art of Win Chun.
Patio
de Tango teaches the 'close embrace' style of Tango, that now predominates
on the dance floors of Buenos Aires. They teach the social style of
Argentine Tango, in contrast to 'stage' or 'fantasy tango', the social
dance is entirely improvised. The classes are designed to have you dancing
socially as soon as possible. The emphasis is on the connection between
the leader and follower, musicality and improvisation.
In
addition to weekly Tango classes, Patio de Tango feature a special musical
or dance performance at each of its Saturday Milongas to support musicians
and dancers whose performances have a passionate and authentic quality.
