Founded
by Zoe Dattner and Louise Swinn in July 2003, Sleepers aims to promote
writing as a viable career option, provide a network of writers and
key individuals and businesses, and publish writing of exceptional quality.
Located
in Collingwood Victoria, Sleepers host events (known as Sleepers
Salons) that bring people from the literary community together; writers,
editors, readers, printers, publishers, copywriters, proofreaders, authors,
booksellers, academics, students, educators, journalists, reviewers,
agents, designers, web publishers and festival co-ordinators are all
invited to share their experiences of today's literary journey in Australia.
Entertainment
at the Salons includes readings from novels-in-progress, talks and discussions,
music, comedy, poetry readings and on-the-spot poetry writing, spoken
word and song, and live onstage interviews. The aim in part is to break
down any barriers that exist within Australia's literary community and
give people the opportunity to get together and celebrate the past,
present and future of Australian writing.
Sleepers
will also be publishing an Almanac in 2004, and welcomes contributions
from local, national and international writers.
