From
the date of incorporation in 1997, the Warringah Printmakers Studio
has operated as an open community facility offering classes, studio
space for hire, custom printing services and opportunities to exhibit
for all students and hirers. The Studio provides a venue for many talented
people, including established artists who avail themselves of the excellent
facilities. Ongoing in the Studios development is a commitment
to safer printmaking practice. A grant from Warringah Council enabled
the Studio to introduce alternative methods and materials. These include
etching aluminium and zinc plate with copper sulphate and using vegetable
oil and a vegetable cleaning agent to clean printmaking tools and equipment.
Further safe methods are constantly being researched and introduced.
Community involvement and education is an important
aspect of the Studios makeup and most projects undertaken by the
Studio tend to reflect a strong community focus. The accomplishment
of these projects relies strongly on the work and efforts of volunteers
and the funding provided by successful grant applications. Opportunities
to be involved in community arts projects such as providing classes
to high school students, working with artists from other cultural groups
and collaborative works, are enthusiastically welcomed by the Studio
Management Committee.
Warringah Printmakers Studio has started to develop
an international profile with initiatives directed at establishing ongoing
networks with printmakers and printmaking groups around the world. The
creative energy generated by diverse artists, teachers and students
committed to producing original prints of high quality ensures the continuance
of Warringah Printmakers Studio as a community art centre of merit.
